Boone County Registration FAQ
Do I need an emissions test to renew in Boone County?
No. Boone County, KY does not require emissions testing (E-Check) for registration renewal. This is one of the key differences from Hamilton County, OH, just across the river. Simply bring your renewal notice and proof of insurance.
My renewal notice never arrived — can I still renew?
Yes. Call the Boone County Clerk at (859) 334-2116 to get your PIN for online renewal, or go in person with your plate number and proof of insurance. The renewal notice is helpful but not required for in-person renewal.
I just bought a car — do I renew at the same office?
New vehicle registrations are handled at the Burlington main office (not Florence). You'll need the title, proof of Kentucky insurance, and payment. If you financed the vehicle, your lender holds the title and you'll receive a title receipt instead. The clerk handles both titling and initial registration in one visit.
What if my insurance isn't showing up in the state system for online renewal?
Kentucky verifies insurance electronically. If your insurer recently updated your policy or you switched providers, there can be a lag of a few days before the state system is updated. Wait 3–5 days and try again, or renew in person and show your insurance card directly.
Can I get a personalized plate at either Boone County office?
Personalized (vanity) plate requests must be submitted in person at the Burlington main office, not at the Florence branch and not online. Processing takes a few weeks — you'll receive your standard renewal sticker in the meantime and the personalized plate by mail.
What sticker goes where on my vehicle in Kentucky?
Kentucky only requires a rear license plate. The annual renewal sticker goes on the rear plate only — not on the windshield and not on a front plate (Kentucky does not require a front plate). The sticker goes in the upper right corner of the rear plate.
