Kenton County Registration FAQ

Why does Kenton County close earlier than Boone County?

Each county clerk sets its own office hours independently. Kenton County Clerk offices close at 4:00 PM, while Boone County closes at 4:30 PM. If you need an after-4 PM option, Boone County's offices are your closest alternative in NKY.

I live in Erlanger — which office should I go to?

Both offices are about equal distance from Erlanger. The Independence branch on Madison Pike is typically faster and has easier parking. However, if you need a title transfer or specialty plate, you must go to Covington — that work cannot be done at Independence.

Can I renew my registration if my address has changed?

Yes, but you need to update your address with the county clerk at the same time. Address changes for vehicle registration can be handled at either the Covington or Independence office. Bring proof of your new Kentucky address (utility bill, lease agreement, or government mail). You can also update your address through the Kentucky One Stop portal before renewing online.

My vehicle has a lien — does the lienholder affect my renewal?

No. Registration renewal is separate from the title/lien process. You can renew your registration even if a lender holds a lien on the title. Just bring your renewal notice and insurance proof as normal.

Is there a grace period after my registration expires in Kentucky?

Kentucky law does not provide a formal grace period for expired registration. Your registration is technically expired the day after the expiration date. There is no late fee charged by the county clerk, but driving with expired tags is a traffic violation. Renew before driving the vehicle again.
