Renewing Online in Kentucky

Most Kentucky passenger vehicle renewals can be completed at onestop.ky.gov. You'll need:

  1. Your renewal notice with the 4-digit PIN (mailed ~30 days before expiration)
  2. Current Kentucky insurance on file with the state
  3. A credit or debit card (small convenience fee applies)

Online won't work if: your insurance isn't verified in the state system, you owe back fees, your vehicle has a stop/hold, or you're changing plate types.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I renew my Kentucky registration online without a renewal notice?

You need the 4-digit PIN from your renewal notice for the Kentucky One Stop portal. If you didn't receive a notice or lost it, call your county clerk's office — they can look up your PIN with your plate number. Alternatively, renew in person at the clerk's office without the notice.

I live in Boone County KY but work in Cincinnati — do I need Ohio registration?

No. Vehicle registration is based on where your vehicle is garaged (your home address), not where you work. If you live in Boone County, register through the Boone County Clerk in Kentucky regardless of where you commute.

What happens if I let my Kentucky registration expire?

Kentucky does not charge a late penalty fee for expired registration itself. However, driving with expired tags is a traffic violation — officers do stop vehicles with expired stickers. Renew before driving again. Online renewal remains available even after expiration.

What is Ohio E-Check and which Cincinnati-area counties require it?

Ohio E-Check is an emissions (exhaust) test to reduce air pollution. Of the Cincinnati-area counties, only Hamilton County requires it. Clermont, Warren, and Butler counties do not. You must pass E-Check before renewing in Hamilton County — allow an extra 30–60 minutes and $19.50 for the test.

I just moved from Hamilton County OH to Kenton County KY — how do I re-register?

You have 15 days after establishing Kentucky residency to register in Kentucky. Bring your Ohio title (or lien holder info), proof of Kentucky address (utility bill or lease), and proof of Kentucky insurance to the Kenton County Clerk. You'll surrender Ohio plates and receive Kentucky plates. The fee is based on the vehicle's book value for the first Kentucky registration.

Does the Kenton County Clerk office in Covington have parking?

The Covington main office on Simon Kenton Way has limited street parking and a small surface lot. The Independence branch on Madison Pike has easier parking and typically shorter waits on most weekdays — recommended if you're coming from the I-275 corridor.

Can I renew multiple vehicles in one visit to the county clerk?

Yes. In Kentucky, you can renew multiple vehicles in a single in-person visit or in a single online transaction. You'll need the renewal notice or PIN for each vehicle. In Ohio, each vehicle is processed separately but you can bring multiple notices to one Deputy Registrar visit.

What's the difference between a Deputy Registrar and the Ohio BMV?

The Ohio BMV is the state agency overseeing vehicle registration and licensing. Deputy Registrars are private businesses or county offices authorized by the BMV to process registrations and renewals on the state's behalf. Most day-to-day renewals happen at Deputy Registrar locations. Service fees vary slightly by location — budget a few extra dollars compared to the base state fee.
